#2 - Island of Maui

An enchanting island

Maui is my favorite because of all the scenic spots and the variety. We never did wake up before dawn to drive to the top of the big volcano for a sunrise or mountain bike ride. I didn't surf this island, but there were spots on the north shore that had huge waves.

A very good hotel:

Royal Lahaina Resort
2780 Kekaa Dr
(808) 543-8311
Lowest price per night : $85 + parking permit
Good hotel for the price. Parking is a pain because the small parking lot fills up quickly.

Required parking permit per day: $9 (Permit is per car so get a big vehicle and split the cost)

Hotel views, cliff diving, and snorkeling over a reef by the cliff

Left 'X' - Royal Lahaina Hotel in Kaanapali
On the horizon, you can see the island of Lana'i. All the shops and restaurants are in the next town, Lahaina, just 3 miles south of Kaanapali. Be sure to eat lunch (go early to beat the crowd) at the waterfront "Cheeseburger in Paradise" restaurant near the wharf.
Kaanapali - view from hotel pool
Three snorkelers can be seen to the left of the cliffs. No boat needed. You can just walk off the beach with flippers and swim to the reef.
Kaanapali beach, near the Sheraton Hotel - Spike and Donna walking to the cliffs with snorkeling gear in hand
Snorkelers seen below are swimming out to the reef. A reef wraps around to the right of the cliff.
Kaanapali beach, near the Sheraton Hotel - Dave cliff diving. Lana'i island in the background.
Wait for the snorkelers to move, find a clearing, and jump head first. Spike is just as crazy as I am. We always have fun together, daring each other to the next level.
Kaanapali beach, near the Sheraton Hotel - Spike cliff diving
Golf course in the background where Austin is playing. He missed out on the cliff diving and snorkeling but had a great game and his cell phone survived a tumble from the golf cart.
Kaanapali - Spike, Donna and Sandy walking back from the cliffs
Both Donna and Spike are ready to go. Spike must get his vigor from his mother.
Kaanapali - Spike and Donna eating chocolate
Turn the A/C down to the 60's, time for them to recuperate. No, it's not a cryogenics lab; they're still alive.

Ask someone in the hotel how to get the cliffs and the coral reef. A rough sketch is drawn in red. To get a photo without the finger painting, click on the picture.
  Kaanapali - Royal Lahaina hotel
I'm really glad Donna and Spike were with us. As natives, they knew the good spots, and the low-priced hotels.
